Symbols Don’t Lie. But Your Drafting Might
I’ve rejected more maps than I care to count. Most failures trace back to five symbols.
Conduit markers must be 0.5pt black lines (not) 0.4, not 0.6. Anything else gets flagged. (Yes, I measure.)
Elevation benchmarks? Hex #2E5A88. Not blue-gray.
Not navy. That exact shade. Font size: 8pt Arial Bold.
No exceptions.
Right-of-way boundaries use 1.2pt red (#C00000) with no dashed variants. Ever. The guide says “solid only.” I’ve seen people argue.
They lost.
Temporary survey tags go in 6pt Helvetica Light. And they must sit 0.15 inches outside the asset outline. Not inside.
Not flush. Outside.
Conflict resolution flags? Orange (#FF6600), 0.75pt, placed above all other layers (even) if it means offsetting the label 0.2 inches right. Layering hierarchy isn’t optional.
It’s law.
Overlapping assets? Fiber under power lines? Power stays on top layer.
The guide explicitly bans manual symbol scaling. (It breaks QA consistency. Period.)
Fiber drops to Layer 3 and shifts 0.1 inches left. No scaling. No fudging.
Skip that rule, and your map goes straight to revision hell.
You think it’s picky? Try explaining to a contractor why the conduit marker vanished during GIS import because you scaled it down 5%.

Scale, Accuracy, and Georeferencing: No Guesswork
I’ve ruined three maps because I picked the wrong scale.
1:500 is for site work. Think foundations, utility trenches, fence lines. You’re on the ground with a tape measure. 1:1000?
That’s for neighborhood-level planning. Roads, sidewalks, drainage. 1:2500? Use it only for broad context.
Like showing where a subdivision sits inside a county.

Switch mid-map if your client changes scope. Or if you realize halfway through that the drone missed the southeast corner. (Yes, that happened.)
Horizontal accuracy must be ±15 cm. Vertical too. Not “close enough.” Not “good for now.” ±15 cm.
To hit that, you need RTK, PPK, or CORS. Phone GPS won’t cut it. Period.
Georeferencing isn’t optional. You need at least 4 GCPs per 1 km². Place them on permanent, visible features.
Curb corners, manhole covers, painted benchmarks.
Use EPSG:2264 on the East Coast. EPSG:26910 in California. Wrong CRS = wrong map.
Validation reports must include coordinates, residuals, and source method. No screenshots. No Excel exports.
Before submitting your map, verify these four georeferencing items: GCP count, CRS code, residual values, and correction method.

You need Surveyor Certification Signature Block (not) optional. Not “nice to have.” It’s mandatory. And it must appear in the map legend.

Here are the other eight required fields: Surveyor ID, Date Captured, Sensor Calibration Log ID, Map Purpose Code, Coordinate System, Datum, Projection, Scale, and Source Data Timestamp.
